Four New CTA Red Line Stations Opening July 20: A Major Upgrade for Chicago Transit

June 25, 2025

Four newly reconstructed CTA Red Line stations are set to open on Chicago’s North Side on Sunday, July 20, 2025, marking one of the largest simultaneous station openings in recent CTA history. The new Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr stations are part of the $2.1 billion Red & Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One project.

These openings replace aging infrastructure that dated back nearly 100 years. The updated stations feature major improvements, including full ADA accessibility with elevators, escalators, wider platforms, and enhanced lighting.

The entire 1.3-mile stretch between Lawrence and Bryn Mawr has undergone a complete rebuild. This includes new tracks, bridges, and a modern signal system designed to improve train reliability and safety.

In addition to structural upgrades, each station includes real-time travel information displays, weather-protected platform canopies, and additional seating for commuter comfort.

Once the new stations open, the temporary Argyle and Bryn Mawr stations—used during the multi-year construction process—will be closed.

Looking ahead, the CTA plans to transform the space beneath the newly rebuilt track structures into community assets. Future additions include dog parks, fitness areas, walking paths, and plazas, expected to be completed between 2026 and 2027.

This project represents a major investment in the city’s transit future and a key step in modernizing one of Chicago’s busiest train lines. The Red Line remains the backbone of the CTA rail system, and these upgrades aim to improve both functionality and the passenger experience for years to come.
